SVG Import Error handling

Hey @Matthias the current experience of importing SVGs is frustrating.
Since I am new to the software, I started with an SVG that I already used in InkStitch to create an embroidery file.

Now, trying to import this file and trying to generate the stitches, I receive an error message: "Unable to fill the path (at least one subpath is not closed)." But there is no context or hint which of the paths/subpaths is affected.

I would wish for the software to either give me the name of the broken path so that I can fix it manually or just close the path with the easiest way between start- and endpoint so that I can see where it is broken visually.

StitchBuddy‘s next corrective update (version 3.3.2) will improve this situation, not only showing a warning, but providing an option to automatically close all subpaths and repeat the stitch generation process: This will have the same result as manually selecting and closing every open subpath.

Edit: There will also be an additional context menu item to close all subpaths - available after right-clicking when creating a shape.

Edit #2: If an SVG path ends at its starting point (but is defined as „open“) StitchBuddy 3.2.2 will automatically close the subpath.

Trying this, with really simple SVGs and a single path in them, I am not able to "Generate Stitches" because the button is disabled, no matter what options I select for the fill or outline 🥲

There is absolutely no indication what is going wrong.

thmsnhl I'm aware that options to create / edit paths in StitchBuddy are rather basic, especially when being compared with vector-based graphic programs like InkScape (the foundation of InkStitch). Actually it is not my intention to offer a competitive editor and I recommend to use 3rd party programs to create more complex shapes. I don't expect StitchBuddy evolving into a full-fledged digitizer, but it rather offers some basic options to add knockdown stitches or simple shapes.

With this being said, the start and end points of open paths are indicated by solid circles. This makes it easier to identify paths which need to be closed before they can be filled. In a future release I consider to close paths automatically if their start and end points are at the same location - even if the path was left open by the external program creating the SVG file.

Regarding the problematic SVG file: The "Generate Stitches" button is disabled when either no Stroke / Fill Type is selected or no path is defined. Importing SVG files might result in no paths depending on the creating program and the import options, please refer to this FAQ article about the different situations and why there is no optimal default setting.

The next update (StitchBuddy 3.3.2) will show an information if no paths were imported from an SVG file, referring to the corresponding help section & FAQ, and pointing to the import option mentioned above.
