Am I able to import a SVG file for a simple shape…do I need to save in a specific setting?

The export should conform to SVG 1.0 or 1.1 and specific settings are not required, but you should ensure a proper scaling: StitchBuddy will interpret every unit - independent of the actual measurement unit - as 1/10 millimeter. So a graphic of 1,000 pixels square (or points, inches, meters) will result in a shape 10 cm x 10 cm (or roughly 4“ x 4“).

Depending on the source programm, importing SVGs might require the „import only stroked paths“ setting being deactivated in the „Open“ dialog. Please refer to this FAQ article to learn the reasoning behind and why there is no optimal default setting.

Let me quote myself with some details as I just answered the very same question by email, today:

Yes, you can - at least to some extent: Paths can be imported from SVGs and used as shapes, like letters or manually constructed paths. You can stitch their contour with running or zigzag stitches and fill them with Tatami patterns. These are by no means full digitizing capabilities, but enough to create simple designs based on vector graphics. For more sophisticated options you might want to look into InkStitch, which is open source.

Please be aware that SVG importing (as well as text support) requires the In-App purchase „StitchBuddy Creator“, although you can test it for free while importing only the first path of an SVG file.
